Australian Basketball League 2020-21 – Match Details

Bryce Cotton has scored 27 points because the Perth Wildcats unleashed a blistering late run to secure a 88-76 NBL convert the South East Melbourne Phoenix at RAC Arena. The Phoenix led by two points with five minutes remaining in Sunday’s match but a 20-3 travel by the Wildcats blew the sport apart. Cotton was the standout with 27 points, seven assists and five steals, while new recruit Todd Blanchfield chipped in with 16 points. American import John Mooney enjoyed a robust Wildcats debut, tallying 13 points and 15 rebounds. Star Phoenix guard Keifer Sykes (10 points, four assists, two steals) was well beaten in his head-to-head battle with Cotton, ending the match in foul trouble. Mitch Creek top scored for South East Melbourne with 17 points, while Cameron Gliddon scored 15.

Cotton was fouled an interesting 11 times and didn’t commit one foul himself. He cashed in by scoring nine of his 11 free-throw attempts. The Wildcats were expected to be rusty early after ending their 14-day quarantine in the dark , but strong efforts by Cotton and Mooney saw them skip bent a 17-9 lead midway through the opening term. Mooney tallied seven rebounds – including five offensive rebounds – within the half-moon , while Cotton scored seven points.

The margin was six points in favour of the Wildcats at quarter time, but two long bombs from Adam Gibson to start out the second term saw the Phoenix rocket into the lead. Gibson visited halftime with 11 points to his name on 3-of-3 shooting from long range, helping his side open up a 42-38 lead. Mooney endeared himself to the house fans with a spectacular slam dunk after snaring his own rebound from a failed three-pointer.
He’s got that mentality, and it’s priceless. That was a true big instigator for us tonight. Perth made just 2-of-12 three-point attempts within the half , but their 11 offensive rebounds limited the damage. The lead changed hands numerous times during a see-sawing last half . But when the sport was there to be won within the dying minutes, the Wildcats unleashed their brutal best, with Jesse Wagstaff and Blanchfield nailing important threes. Revenge was sweet for an injury-hit Sydney Kings as they registered a milestone 99-91 NBL victory over the Cairns Taipans on Saturday night.

Still smarting from a controversial one-point loss to Cairns last week, imports Casper Ware and Jarell Martin inspired a victory which will little question be remembered by the Kings for a few time. Besides registering their first win of the season, the Kings (1-1) also notched victory No.500 for the franchise since their 1988 inception and marked new coach Adam Forde’s maiden triumph. Classy guard Ware only had two points by halftime but finished with 22 as did former NBA Draft first round pick Martin despite being on limited minutes. Former Memphis forward Martin also picked up 11 rebounds in but 24 minutes court time.

It was an attempt within the arm for last season’s minor premiers who were hit by another injury after bench guard Angus Glover broke down late within the second term with a knee complaint. Glover has already undergone three reconstructions in his budding career. He joins a Kings injury list that also includes big names Xavier Cooks, Daniel Kickert and Didi Louzada. Their depth had already been put to the test after losing Boomers great Andrew Bogut and captain Kevin Lisch (retirement) plus Jae’Sean Tate (NBA) within the off-season.

Another injury could have deflated a Kings outfit that has been faraway from home since Boxing Day thanks to COVID-19 border restrictions. Instead they gained redemption against the Taipans who won their last round clash after Ware was controversially denied two free throws at the death. Last season’s semi-finalists the Taipans (1-2) suffered back-to-back home losses for the primary time since January 13, 2019.
